Why an open heel works

No heel counter means nothing rubs, nothing needs lacing, and swollen evening feet still slide in. The trade-off in an ordinary mule is that your foot slides around on a flat board. A contoured footbed fixes that: the arch is filled, the heel sits in a shallow cup, and the toe box keeps the foot from pushing forward.

Where you will wear them

True to European sizing; between two sizes, take the larger — a mule should hold the foot at the instep without pressing the toes. The cork moulds to your footprint over the first week or two.
