Clogs, flats and closed sandals — the difference

Clogs have a wider, more rounded toe box and slip straight on. Closed-toe flats close the heel too, which makes them the winter version. In between sit the closed-toe sandals here: covered at the front, open behind, usually with an adjustable strap so you can set the fit.

The footbed

Cork is the reason these do not feel like a plastic sandal. It is firm enough to hold the arch shape under weight and soft enough to take on the outline of your own foot over the first week or two of wear. The leather cover means it stays comfortable against bare skin, and the EVA outsole keeps the whole thing light and slip-resistant.

Sizing and fit

European sizing, true to size; between two sizes take the larger. A closed toe means you need a few millimetres of room at the front, so this is not the style to size down in. Adjustable buckles give roughly a full width of adjustment across the instep.

Can I wear these with socks? With thin socks, yes, and many people do in spring and autumn. Size up if you plan to wear thick ones.

Are they good for standing all day? That is what the contoured footbed is for. Give them a week of a few hours a day first so the cork can settle to your foot.

Do they run narrow? The toe box is generous rather than pointed. If you are between widths, choose a style with a buckle.
